Agrifood Trade, Agrifood Policy, Biodiversity, Agroforestry and Food Justice

Gideon Commey gained an undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Food Science from the University of Ghana and a Masters in Environment and Sustainable Development from the University College London (UCL).

He founded the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM), the country’s leading youth-led environmental advocacy and campaign organization, his work spanning over 15 years. During this time, he’s had a significant impact on the communities, demonstrating his ability to lead and create change that inspires others. Gideon has also worked with notable non-governmental organizations in international development and conservation, such as WWF-UK, Christian Aid, Royal Commonwealth Society, and 350Vermont, among others.

His work in Ghana involves collaborating with farmers, researchers, and policymakers in food and agriculture to produce food sustainably and simultaneously protect the environment while improving the livelihoods of farmers and households. This is aimed at contributing to addressing climate change, improving biodiversity, and reducing poverty in communities.

Gideon is currently pursuing a PhD in Food Systems at UCL as part of the UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training Program. His research is centred on international food trade, its impact on biodiversity, and how food and trade policy can shape domestic agricultural production. In addition to his academic pursuits, he serves as a policy advisor for the Farming and Countryside Programme (FCP) in the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
